Fast food ones:
Taco Cabana (how would I have survived college without it?) and Whataburger (french fries as good as McD's), Church's Chicken. Why does NorCal not have any 24 hours places?
Specifics: Ruby's BBQ in Austin, Ninfa's, Mongolian BBQ in Austin, Luby's Cafeteria, Threadgills' in Austin, Pappasito's, Chuy's.
Mexican and BBQ are pitiful out in California. Don't get me started on the lack of good fried chicken either...
On the bright side, me and my bf are going to Texas for a vacation with my family at Padre Island (I miss warm beaches!). He can finally get BBQ as the gods meant it to be.

Re: Texas restaurants you miss?
Sat, July 17, 2004 - 11:26 AMI've been trying to get back to Threadgills on my last 3 visits. I love their bread, veggies and chkn fried steak.
When I moved to MD I missed Jack in the Box (none on the East coast) but that's been remedied living in Cal.
I miss Double Daves pizza (Cici's for that matter). I miss Otto's BBQ in Houston and I really miss Ninfa's Happy Hour. Oh, and all the free happy hour buffets.

Re: Texas restaurants you miss?
Sat, July 17, 2004 - 11:41 AMOh, and I've been trying to grow okra in my SSF garden for 3 years now. It just won't take. I miss fresh okra! Fried, steamed, even boiled, I love the okra! -

oooooooooookra!
Sat, July 17, 2004 - 1:49 PMDo you know where I had to go to get good okra outside of the South? NYC!
There is a really good place, I think in Tribeca, called Bubby's. They serve excellent home cookin' meals, but a little more upscale, tho the prices are fair. They have some yummy cornmeal-crusted okra...
Ppl in Cal don't even know what okra is for the most part. I have seen some in the Menlo Park farmer's market on Sunday morning, so I might buy some and see if I can make it.

Mon, July 19, 2004 - 10:08 PMOh, i'm sorry, but the monte crito is much better at Bennigans, at least the one near Astroworld! I loved the bread pudding at Mama's.
Hey, what was that Mex place near downtown where you had to know to knock on the door to get in, no signs or anything. I was there once. That was good. Chic too. -

Re: Texas restaurants you miss?
Mon, May 1, 2006 - 9:45 AMYou're right... I always thought it was TGI that had the Monte Cristo... however a few months ago I was in Florida and found that I was mistaken, it was Bennigans as you said. :-) I remember one year right after Christmas my friends and I all met up at that Bennigans next to the Astrodome on Kirby. We all hung out, drank some beers had a good time, then I had to drive a short way south on Kirby to the Univision (KLXN Ch. 45) TV station where I was working at the time, yep.. I was working a Christmas day shift that day. :-) But I loved every second I was there at that job.

Re: Texas restaurants you miss?
Wed, February 16, 2005 - 7:46 PMGod, I recall, I must have been 6 or 7, hearing What-a-burger commercials on the radio. I thought they were saying water burgers and it was a long time before I allowed myself to try one because, even tho I later found out it's name, I always thought there was something odd about them. Then I got hooked and was eating there all the time. (I'm 37 now!) -

Re: Texas restaurants you miss?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 9:11 AMYes, my ex-boyfriend from El Salvador thought I was saying "Waterburger" too. He thought they were made from WATER BUFFALO! haha
Needless to say, when he visited Austin/S.A., he loved them!
