There is a report on the smog in Houston. It seems a good deal of it is related to all the BBQ. It was reported they found actual traces of meat in the air.

That's right, vegetarians. Meat. It's what you're breathin' !

Does anyone else remember the big crawfish parties in and around Houston in season? 2 saw horses, a piece of plywood, lots of crawfish and dixie beer?

Plex

PS. I do throw a big crawfish party in June for those that are having withdrawls.

Howdy folks. I'm GTT today. I land in Austin around 415. I've got plans to get my accent back, eat at Threadgill's and Chuy's, shop at some thrift stores, listen to some live music and check out my friend's new tattoo studio. I'll eat some okra for ya! Try to keep things peaceful here while I'm gone, now, y'hear?

i grew up in Granbury, outside Ft. Worth. moved to LA in 87 and SF in 91. i now call Alameda home -- it actually kinda reminds me of Texas...

Texas restaurants you miss?

Fast food ones:
Taco Cabana (how would I have survived college without it?) and Whataburger (french fries as good as McD's), Church's Chicken. Why does NorCal not have any 24 hours places?

Specifics: Ruby's BBQ in Austin, Ninfa's, Mongolian BBQ in Austin, Luby's Cafeteria, Threadgills' in Austin, Pappasito's, Chuy's.

Mexican and BBQ are pitiful out in California. Don't get me started on the lack of good fried chicken either...

On the bright side, me and my bf are going to Texas for a vacation with my family at Padre Island (I miss warm beaches!). He can finally get BBQ as the gods meant it to be.

Today, for some reason, I started thinking about Stevens and Pruitt. I started listening to them when I was in HS in Dallas (85-86) and then they went to Houston. Shortly, I was there as well for college and listened to them for the last 4 years I spent in Texas. I guess they are gone now, huh? They were so funny. And I loved how whenever it was 69' in Montrose, they would have little gay parade playing in the background.

Do you guys ever get the response from people, "But you don't have an accent.." or "so do you like country?" (no I don't). I think it's interesting the conceptions people have. The show Dallas was big when I was in HS and I used to do a lot of traveling. I was always asked if I lived on a ranch or had an oil well (well, my family did, actually).

My accent comes back when I go home. But growing up in Houston and born into sophisticated family, I don't have a thick drawl.

Some penguins simply spend their time standing in large groups waiting for their time in the inner circle to keep warm. Some penguins build nests of dirt, grasses or even stones. Penguins have been known to steal pebbles and stones for their nest. Females have been known to prostitute for them. Others simply pass one from their kidney. While this is quite painful, it is known to cause some penguins to have to reschedule holiday parties. Finally, you can say you know one such penguin!

So now that I have passed my 2 small and one larger stone, and I've stopped writhing in pain and crying mommy, I'm ready to party again! The tree is trimmed, the halls are decked and the deck is at the end of the hall. Fa la la la la, la la la la!

This time it'll be:

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2005
STARTING AT 4PM
335 Valverde Dr. in South San Francisco, CA 94080

So again, I ask that you bring your favorite appetizer and a wrapped white elephant gift (something you have around the house is fine) for a crazy Santa gift exchange. (But if you can't bring a thing, don't fret, you'll be taken care of!)

Feel free to bring your other friends or family. Stop by for a quick hello or stay the night. Just come enjoy some holiday cheer.

"Ark," the herald penguins sing, glory to the penguin king!

OK, where in Texas do they put a fried egg on top of their burgers?

I lived in South Texas for 24 years and never saw anyone eat a burger like that, but they serve it in NY and CA as a "Texas" burger.

I always thought a true Texas burger was no mayo or ketchup but keep the mustard and onions - a la Whataburger?

First off, sorry this tribe has been so dead lately. I need to work on growing it, but maybe after my flooded bedroom has carpet again and I get my puter back together.

I'm in NYC right now (Noo York CITY!!! get a rope). I saw a taping of the Letterman show yesterday, I'm a huge fan. I ate at the Hello Delly and had a nice conversation with Rupert Jee. When he found out I was from Texas, he started asking about chicken fried steak. After explaining the name we talked about how it's made. He wants to make it for his place. I told him it also makes a great sandwich. (the deli makes hot dishes as well as sandwiches.)

He gave me his addy so I could send a good recipe and I'll be suggesting he name it the Gibson, after me. So if you are ever in town and eat there and you see CFS or its sandwich it's my doing!

Ah, I had such a wonderful time in Austin last weekend. My brother's wedding was the most awesome I've ever seen!

The Tex-Mex was wonderful (ate at Guerro's on Congress). I spent a few hours in Lampassas and ate a burger at Storm's. I'd forgotten how Texas also seems to have the best burgers. Oh, and having fried okra instead of fries was devine! While in Dallas I enjoyed some good BBQ complete with jalepeno's on the side. The lady I ordered from was impressed. I told her, when you get only home a few times a year, you've got to do it all the way!

One thing that scared me tho, was hearing 2 (two) people say they felt that Bush was a very honest president. Apparently a large rock has fallen on our beloved state and many people have chosen to live there. But that's another tribe...

It was hot and muggy as hell. The capitol is still beautiful. Oh, and check out my friends in the band, www.dreamtrybe.com. I got to hear them play just off 6th st. Mon night. It was good to hear them again and they have a new album coming out soon.

Hope we can all get together some day soon.

I tried posting an event, but I dont' see it anywhere.
Who'se down for Tex Mex? (ie food actually covered in cheese as opposed to that heart healthy watered down fresh mex crap)
I heard this place called Puerto Alegre has good cheap food, and superpowered margaritas served up by the pitcher.
I wanna try it as soon as possible. Anyone down?

Nothing happening here in a while. I was looking at my schedule and I see a nice opening on Th July 15th. Why don't we do a happy hour or something. I found a great happy hour at the El Torrito on Bayshore near SFO. Cheap ritas, $1 tacos and half off apps. What say you?

I know it's not very Texan, but I developed my love for it living in Houston, and I know it's very short notice (some other plans fell thru), BUT...

I'd love to find some people have Dim Sum brunch with tomorrow. There's a place in SSF I've heard that is wonderful (Grand Palace). We could meet there about 11am for Chinese. I've still not seen the Alamo movie so that could fall into place as well.

Let me know if you are interested.

So they can't do tex mex here, but at least there's a great BBQ joint. Memphis Minnie's on Haight. Brisket smoked 18 hrs, bbq sauce with butter in it. As good as Goode and Co. BBQ in Houston It isn't the cheapest place on earth though.

And if any of ya'll thought that with the name Memphis Minnie's they'd put coleslaw on the sandwiches like they do up in Tennessee, they don't.

Glad you guys are here. I feel so popular!!! I don't know if anyone here makes a good chicken fried steak, we may have to make that and enchaladas on our own. I have CFS from Chili's, not bad, but...

So here's my story, Born in Lubbock, moved to Houston at about 1year. My parents soos split up. about 12 years later I moved to Dallas and went to Skyline HS. Then off to U-Houston. Moved to Dallas a second time and then back to Houston once more. I moved out of Texas to Maryland in '95 and moved to SSF in 2000.

I hope to start having gatherings from time to time. Pot lucks, happy hours, dinners out and about. So come up with some ideas and recruit more fellow Texans.
